Sustainable design is a natural expression of the mission of a botanical institution. Beyond conserving energy or using renewable materials, their challenge is to conserve, repair and enrich the fundamental resources of their site ?land, water, vegetation, cultural traditions, and human resources. Carol Franklin has worked with both the Dallas Arboretum and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. Her lecture will explore how the concepts of sustainability can permeate every facet of a public garden.

Hilton Fort Worth Hotel 815 Main Street Fort Worth, TX
To make individual reservations or to purchase a table, please visit www.bbbs.org/taste or contact 888.887.BIGS.
The 30th Annual Big Taste of Fort Worth promises foodies a culinary experience well worth the price of admission. With the newest hot spots backed by some of the biggest names joining this tasting event?s restaurant roster, attendees can count on a fierce battle for ?Best of Fort Worth? bragging rights. Fort Worth newcomers such as Buttons, Grace and Eddie V?s are joining the lineup of the city?s finest dining establishments such as Del Frisco?s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Reata and Ruth?s Chris Steakhouse for the event on Sunday, April 26, at the Hilton Fort Worth Hotel at 815 Main Street in Fort Worth. The event benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters? youth mentoring programs.

This should be a really fun event,? said Big Taste of Fort Worth Chair Larry Anfin. ?You can bet that each of these top restaurants will be producing award winning fare as they try to capture that ?Best of Fort Worth? title. And of course, the fact that it all benefits children is added motivation.?
Participating restaurants will compete against last year?s winners who are returning to defend their titles. In 2008, judges chose Daddy Jack?s Lobster & Chowder House as the Best of Big Taste of Fort Worth Restaurant Award winner while the People?s Choice honors went to Wildcatter Steakhouse.

For the event, each restaurant is judged on taste, style, presentation and a number of other criteria. The winning restaurant will be presented the traveling handcrafted chef?s hat which can be proudly displayed in the award-winning restaurant until next year?s Big Taste of Fort Worth event. Judges for this year?s event are Judie Byrd, Founder of The Culinary School of Fort Worth and Super Suppers, Host of Judie Byrd?s Kitchen and Food Editor of Fort Worth, Texas Magazine; J R Clark, Central Market Beer and Wine Manager; Brian Estridge, Co-Host of the Galloway and Company Crew on ESPN Radio and Voice of the TCU Horned Frogs; and NBC 5 Sports Anchor Newy Scruggs.

Sponsors for the event include Bank of Texas; Coors Distributing Company of Fort Worth; FASTSIGNS; Fort Worth, Texas Magazine; Moses, Palmer & Howell, LLP; Southwest Securities, FSB; Western Production; Ben E. Keith Company; Cash America; Frost; Quicksilver Resources, Inc.; QuikTrip Corp; and XTO Energy.

Individual tickets for the main tasting are $85 and individual tickets for the VIP Wine Event and main tasting are $150. Entertainment will be provided by Trey and the Tritones, and the silent auction will feature unique and exclusive items.

Building for the Future: green development in Fort Worth

Pat Harrison Assistant Director and Head of Education Botanical Research Institute of Texas, Inc. 817-332-4441 ext. 220 Metro: 817-429-3200 Email: pharrison@brit.org
As the last lecturer in BRIT?s 2008-09 Lecturer series, Jyl DeHaven will bring the discussion back home to Fort Worth. With over a decade of experience in the rapidly growing ?green? industry, DeHaven will discuss how Fort Worth is turning its attention to sustainable development and smart growth. With vast improvements in the availability and quality of green products and increasingly competitive pricing, Fort Worth can become a leader in environmental practices, making the leap beyond sustainable development to restorative development.

As a member of Fort Worth's Sustainability Task Force, Ms. DeHaven has a close eye on efforts underway to sustain the city?s ecological and social systems while tackling the costs of infrastructure expenses, traffic growth, air quality, etc. One example is the Urban Race Street project a mixed-use development located a mile from downtown and within walking distance of the Trinity River. It will be a live / work / play environment that focuses on energy efficiency and environmental sensitivity, while creating a true community center.

Texas BBQ Comes to Fort Worth
Photographer Wyatt McSpadden will be autographing copies of his new book, Texas BBQ, at the Barnes & Noble - Hulen Center on Saturday, May 30, 2009, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Wyatt will visit with patrons and take questions from the
audience about the Texas BBQ project.
McSpadden has spent some twenty years documenting
barbecue?specifically, the authentic family-owned cafes that are small-town mainstays. Traveling tens of thousands of
miles, McSpadden has crisscrossed the state to visit scores of barbecue purveyors, from fabled sites like Kreuz?s in Lockhart to remote spots like the Lazy H Smokehouse in Kirbyville. Color or black-and-white, wide angle or close up, his pictures convey the tradition and charm of barbecue.
Wyatt McSpadden?s photography has ranged from shooting ranch roundups and football games to capturing religion, race, medicine, crime, technology, and virtually every other aspect of Texas life. His work has appeared in scores of publications nationwide, most notably in Texas Monthly, where he is a contributing photographer.
Texas BBQ is published by University of Texas Press.

This is her most requested topic and is for anyone who is going through depression, cancer treatments, divorce, job change or demand...anything that forces us to grow. "Lincoln200 Festival: Celebrating Lincoln's 200th Birthday"
09/12/2009 thru 10/04/2009
500 West 3rd Street, Fort Worth, TX
www.fortworthlibrary.org 817-871-8022
The Fort Worth Public Library Foundation will kick off the “Lincoln200 Festival: Celebrating Lincoln’s 200th Birthday” in a grand way by participating in Fort Worth’s annual Fall Gallery Night on Sept. 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Every year, locals take the opportunity of Fall Gallery Night to browse Fort Worth’s legendary art scene and mingle with artists. Participating art venues include all types, from the established Fort Worth galleries of the west side to the chic showrooms of the trendy, up and coming south side.

This year, the Foundation brings a new perspective to Gallery Night by making it the grand opening of “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, a Man for All Times,” a national traveling exhibit that examines Abraham Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy. The Central Library is the ONLY STOP in Texas for the exciting collection. Organized by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, this free exhibition goes beyond the public images of Lincoln to focus on the evolution of his beliefs and his impact on the nation.

In addition to catching a first glimpse of the national exhibit, guests during Fall Gallery Night will also be among the first to view the Abraham Lincoln Collection (1860-1960) from the Dow Foundation as well as The Pate Lincoln Collection. These two gatherings represent the years of hard work and artistic passion of some of Fort Worth’s most prominent arts patrons. The expanse of work in this show offers a poignant glimpse into the life of the 16th president and the Civil War era.

Patrons can enjoy these important collections to the tunes of the Frontier Brigade Band, an 18-member band that celebrates the Mid-Nineteenth Century American Brass Band Movement by utilizing period musical instruments. They will sport authentic Civil War uniforms while performing popular music from the 1840s through 1914, including pieces from the military and civilian band books of the era and music from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Cowboy Band. Students from the UNT College of Music will offer selections by Stephen Foster. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. The evening is FREE and open to the public, with FREE parking. For more information and calendar of the festival’s events, see www.fortworthlibrary.org.
