Culture
Fort Worth is defined not just by our Western past but by the rich cultural offerings we enjoy. We foster one of the most thriving arts destinations in the world, and are referred to as the "Cultural Capital of the Southwest."
Early in the life of Fort Worth, a culture of art collection and appreciation thrived. The Cultural District is home to five world-renowned museums, known for their diverse collections and their architecture: the Kimbell Art Museum by Louis Kahn; Tadao Ando's Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Amon Carter Museum of American Art by Philip Johnson; the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History by Legorreta + Legorreta; and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. The Kimbell is known as America's best small art museum and the Modern was just named one of the World's Most Beautiful Museums by Travel + Leisure magazine.
The museums of the Cultural District are all within walking distance of each other in a beautiful park-like setting. Adjacent to them is the Botanic Gardens, Fort Worth Zoo and the new Platinum LEED certified Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) with its mission to collect and preserve botanical samples from around the world.
Sundance Square, the core of our glittering downtown, is home to Bass Performance Hall, a top performance venue in the United States housing our symphony, ballet and traveling Broadway shows. Fort Worth is also home to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, a strong independent artist and gallery scene, theaters, film and music festivals.
