Everyone knows the theme "O Fortuna," used in countless movie trailers and TV commercials, but the entire work is a delight, with its intense rhythmic excitement, its wacky instrumentation, and earthy themes about love and life--there's even a drinking song!

Music Scene Live, hosted by Allison & Stone, is a new radio show recorded live at The Thirsty Armadillo, every Saturday, 1:30-3:30pm. The show features the best of local singer/songwriters and bands and their original music in "live" performance in front of a "live" audience. The artists are interviewed about their music, and experiences as a performing artist. We also go out to the audience for comments/questions. Nine rarely seen bronze sculptures by Frederic Remington are featured in a special exhibition honoring our 30th anniversary. Mary Burke, Director of the Museum, explains that "Frederic Remington created 22 of the most memorable bronzes of any American sculptor of this time and we are very proud to present nine of them as part of the Museum's 30th anniversary celebration. Remington's influence in shaping the West of the popular imagination cannot be overstated.

This is Phase 1 of the exhibit and Phase 2 will begin Feb 28, 2013-June 2, 2013.

The American artist Barry McGee rose to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the graffiti boom in San Francisco. Although McGee is primarily associated with street culture and the self-taught artists of the Mission School art movement, he was formally trained when he studied painting and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Drawing on such diverse influences as the Mexican Muralists, tramp art, surfer culture, graffiti from the 1970s and 1980s, and the beat poets, McGee’s now widely-recognizable imagery is as perceptive and poetic as it is graphic and dynamic.

Known for his images featuring single words suspended in space, Los Angeles-based artist Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) has experimented with a diverse range of media and styles throughout his career. Invited to work at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1969, as he began to gain notoriety for his Pop Art approach, Ruscha embraced lithography as a means to explore recurring themes from his paintings and screenprints.

Marie Cosindas (b. 1925) did not intend to be a photographer. The eighth of ten children in a modestly situated Greek family living in Boston, she studied dressmaking in school and took up a career designing textiles and children’s shoes, also acting as a color coordinator for a company that made museum reproductions in stone. On the side, she created abstract paintings filled with atmospheric color.

For the past fifteen years Lynda Lanker, a Eugene, Oregon based artist, has been traveling throughout the western United States sketching, painting, interviewing and photographing iconic women. As the American West, once dominated by ranches and agriculture, is tamed and transformed through settlement and corporate development, Lanker has persisted in her commitment to preserve the spirit and stories of ranch women and cowgirls.

This exhibition and accompanying publication present the portraits and stories of more than fifty women, from thirteen western states, who gain their sustenance and livelihood from the land. Several of these women are National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame Honorees.

05/01/2013 - 05/30/2013 The Swartz brothers – David, John, and Charles – arrived in Fort Worth starting in the mid-1880s & for the next 30 years they observed the city and its environs through the lens of a camera, snapping pictures of local people, events, and architecture, and leaving for us a priceless legacy. Today, hundreds of their images survive, some quite famous, although the brothers themselves are largely forgotten. The best-known Swartz photograph shows the five members of the “Wild Bunch” (aka, the “Fort Worth Five”) posed in John’s studio in 1900. the photos are on exhibit in the West Wing Gallery of the Fort Worth Central Library. Join us for a reception and presentation from 2 -5 p.m. on May 11th.
