Historic Sites

Thistle HillCattle, Oil, Arts and Culture - The history of Fort Worth is the history of the American West.

Visitors to Fort Worth will discover some of the most intriguing historical sites in the nation within the "City of Cowboys and Culture." In downtown, take a walk along the Heritage Trails, a series of twenty-two bronze sidewalk markers, concentrated on Main Street from Heritage Park to the Fort Worth Water Gardens, that tell the story of Fort Worth's history, people, places and events.

In the Stockyards National Historic District, see the Livestock Exchange Building. Built in 1902 and known as "The Wall Street of the West," this building was designed to house the many livestock commission companies, Telegraph offices, railroad offices and other support business of Fort Worth's livestock industry in the early 1900s. And don't miss Cowtown Coliseum, home to the world's first indoor rodeo. Construction on this building began in 1907 and was completed in just 88 working days, in time for the grand opening of the Feeders & Breeders Show. Cowtown Coliseum is now home to rodeo events every Friday and Saturday night year-round.

Want to see how the cattle barons lived? Then a visit to Thistle Hill and the Ball-Eddelman-McFarland Housemight be right up your alley. Thistle Hill, built in 1903, is one of the Southwest's best preserved Georgian Revival Mansions. And the Ball-Eddelman-McFarland House, built in 1899, is Fort Worth's premier example of Queen Anne-style Victorian architecture.

Whether you like your history from 150 years ago or just a couple of decades passed, you'll find endless opportunities celebrating the history of Fort Worth.
