It’s the worst kept secret in Fort Worth that one of the surefire, must-be places on any first Friday of pretty much any month is at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, where often great music (usually cool or trad jazz) alchemizes with lip-smacking, themed cocktails to jump-start the weekend. And, this Friday, July 5, beginning at 5 p.m., is certainly no exception as the Bruton and Price Swingmasters fill the Modern’s capacious lobby with hip-jazz rhythms, the night’s signature cocktail, the Roman Candle, will stoke everyone’s mood. So all fine and good for that first Friday, but what of the second Friday in July? A nightlife stepchild, possibly? Not likely as the Modern hosts Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth’s Dance Exchange – A Choreographers Showcase.

Spread out over two nights, (July 12-13) this dance-u-copia will convert the museum’s lobby into a prime stage for a rich menu of lyrical movement. It will be marked by the welcome return engagement of Deborah Birrane, a Seattle-based solo performer offering up a regional first-look at works choreographed by Joanna Cashman and Debra Knapp. Not to be outdone, a trio of Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth’s company dancers -- Claudia Orcasitas, Tina Mullone, and Jacqueline Todd, the latter joined by her highly precocious seven-year old daughter, Catherine DePetris -- will launch their own premieres at the event. The two-day dance-a-thon will be rounded out by an important regional premiere where choreographer and performer, Lonny Joseph Gordon, will offer up his solo, Radiant. “Radiant” could be the perfect single-word descriptor for the combining of this level of dance talent with the exceptional setting of the Modern.
