When it comes to some of the more daring and inventive theaters in Fort Worth, Jubilee Theatre, located in the heart of downtown Sundance Square, offers an incredible array of performances. it's never too early to start planning to see what's coming to the Jubilee Theatre stage! The 2013-2014 Jubilee season, the company's 33rd, will feature six productions that artistic director, Tre Garrett, has characterized as "diverse, emotional, and thought provoking." Kicking off the season, with previews October 11-17, will be Neat, a memoir-structured work by Charlayne Woodard tracing her experiences growing up black in the U.S. during the turbulent 50's and 60's. Jubilee's very own Tre Garrett, collaborating with Geno Young, has created Jubilation which, though set in the town of Rudyville, is built around the universal celebration of Christmas. And January, 2014 will kick-off Jubilee's second half with The Mountaintop which, in its depiction of the last night in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- in the now infamous Lorraine Motel -- confronts the late-great Dr. King with a mysterious visitor who forces him to examine unsparingly his own capacity for humanity. The Mountaintop was so effective in its theme that it garnered the highly coveted Olivier Award for Best New Play. Jubilee will then round out the next season with a warm blanket of familiar pieces -- from Ain't Misbehavin' to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and that playfully macabre classic, Little Shop of Horrors.
