STOCKYARD STAMPEDE COMES TO FORT WORTH
The road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics stops in downtown Fort Worth December 20-22, 2019
FORT WORTH, Texas (October 18, 2019) – USA Wrestling, the governing body for wrestling in the United States, has named Fort Worth, Texas, as the host city for the 2019 Senior National and Tour of America: Stockyard Stampede. This two-part event is set to take place in the Fort Worth Convention Center (FWCC) December 20-22, 2019.
The Senior Nationals, which is the National Championships for Olympic-style wrestling, will showcase the nation’s best athletes in the three Olympic events: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. This event is the most important event in the 2020 Olympic Trials qualifying process. The top five finishers in each of the 18 Olympic weight categories will earn a spot in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials, wrestling at Penn State, April 4-5, 2020.
The Fort Worth Sports Commission and the FWCC were awarded the title of host after a highly competitive bidding process.
“USA Wrestling is a powerhouse when it comes to the U.S. Olympic landscape and we are extremely honored to be able to host such a prestigious event here in Fort Worth,” said Jason Sands, director of the Fort Worth Sports Commission. “We couldn’t do this without the support of our local Texas USA Wrestling representatives. Winning this bid is a true testament to their efforts and USA Wrestling’s confidence in Fort Worth to deliver a championship experience to their athletes and coaches.”
The event will also feature Folkstyle wrestling for middle school athletes and below in the Stockyard Stampede, a brand new event for USA Wrestling expected to draw an estimated 500 participants. “USA Wrestling is excited to begin our 2020 Olympic Trials process in Fort Worth, Texas,” said Pete Isais, director of national events for USA Wrestling. “The Fort Worth Sports Commission has been instrumental throughout our planning process. Our athletes, coaches and fans will enjoy the proximity of hotels, numerous meal options and competition venue within a walkable distance.”
